ABBOTSFORD INVALID STOUT

Abbotsford Invalid Stout. The label looks like nothing has changed since 1949. The name is kind of curious… a beer for invalids? This is an old-school stout brewed by Carlton & United Breweries (CUB). It’s primarily available in Victoria but you can find it easily enough online. I picked one up from a bottlo in Melbourne.

Even from the bottle, there’s a great dark chocolate and coffee aroma. Relatively thin body and low ABV for a stout (5.2%). It has a nice dark chocolate and coffee flavour with a moderately bitter finish.

The relatively thin body and mouthfeel are really the only things letting the team down. It’s like a mix between a Tooheys Old and a Coopers Extra Stout with perhaps a little more coffee flavour.

Much better than expected. Along with Sheaf Stout and Reschs, it’s one of the better beers brewed by CUB.

7/10
