ADNAMS BROADSIDE

Adnams Broadside. There are a lot of shit beers in England (I'm not picking on the soapdodgers here, but there are), but this isn't one of them.

This is the Adnams Broadside, and it's a fabulous bit of brewing. The Extra Strong Bitter-style beer chimes in at 6.8 percent, but doesn't even hint at being over-alcoholic.

That's because it's too complex and nuanced, just like British attempts to turn the economic brinkmanship and subsequent military catastrophe of the Battle of Sole Bay the beer commemorates into a victory for the Empire.

Essentially, the English (and the French, with whom they momentarily forgot to fight), imposed a blockade on Dutch ports back in 1672, essentially to dominate the trade routes. Then the Dutch navy snuck out and smacked the Brits soundly on the nose and got the embargo lifted, which English history books have turned into a glorious triumph. Sort of a naval Rorke's Drift.

Anyway, the beer is a rich brown affair that has a lot of malt, some plum and a lot of bread on the nose.

It hunkers down with great, rich mouthfeel and delivers a solid baseline of malt, some pepperiness and a wonderful, Gold hop subtlety that reveals its full glory only at the end.

Beautifully balanced, lovely on a cold winter's day. Buy enough to sink a battleship

8/10
