ALLGASH CURIEUX

Allgash Brewing Curieux. I didn't order this. It was, oddly, sent out along with the cheese in the place of wine at a toffee-nosed restaurant in Carmel, California.

And I'm glad they sent it. It's brewed in the Belgian Tripel Ale style, but they've aged in it oak barrels that have cuddled bourbon as it aged, and the Maine brewer is onto a winner.

It's a gloriously complex thing with a slighty muddy, deeply amber colour and a wonderful head, all working moderately well at hiding an ABV in the 11% range.

It has a gamut of smells that increase as it warms, though our restaurant knew what it was doing (with the beer, anyway) and served it at around 8 degrees.

It initially smells of bananas, cloves and apples, but then you have a slightly alcohol tinge before the bourbon hits. That all settles down after pouring to more moderate aroma levels, but it's a great start.

Its tastes accurately reflect the nose, with some alcohol pervading things at the end, but it's just marvellous.

The only thing holding it back from perfection is a slightly thin mouthfeel and a feeling that it's a touch over carbonated. And I don't even like Tripels!

9/10
