ALPIRSBACHER KLOSTERBRAU SPEZIAL

Alpirsbacher Klosterbrau Spezial. Yet another small brewery from yet another abbey in southern Germany. That's no surprise as fat abbots were the ones who developed Europe's drinking culture to raise a few sheckles in medieval times and this one's from the Black Forest.

And it's a fine beer, in the Bavarian helles style, even though it's from Baden-Wurttemburg, and it's as good as most of the Bavarians at this.

It's a little hard to find outside Germany, but it's worth chasing up.

The head sits a beautiful finger depth when you pour it, but it doesn't stay that way for long. Still, it hints at the medium carbonation the beer contains and there's a beautiful mouthfeel, too. Middle soft, with no clingy aftertaste.

There is a lovely balance of caramel malt sweetness and late-tongue hops. It's finely balanced, fine drinking.

8/10
