BECK'S PILSNER

Beck's Pilsner. This is a beer which I never intentionally seek out but if I was at a bar/restaurant and had to choose between Beck's, Heineken and Stella, I’d go the Beck's.

It conforms nicely to the beer bottle colour theory – green bottles are usually light in the body, highly carbonated and have a grassy hop flavour. The only difference is Beck's is perhaps a little more bitter than your average grassy European Lager.

However, when I taste Beck's for this review something is different – the mouthfeel isn’t right. It seems thinner, less carbonated and missing that nice crisp finish you’ve come to expect.

Then, in a light bulb, moment I remember this is being brewed locally now. Sure enough on the label “Beer brewed & bottled in Australia by Lion Nathan”.

The difference between this local brew and the real deal, brewed in Germany, is like chalk and cheese. Some of the difference could be explained by the water chemistry but a clever brewer can account for this and adjust mineral content accordingly.

However, Hahn Premium has been brewed by Lion Nathan since 1999 and Chuck Hahn only noticed in 2012 that they were using old season hops and not adding hop additions correctly.

It’s a big gamble for Beck's to place their reputation in the hands of Lion Nathan. Let’s face it, Lion Nathan isn’t exactly regarded as a brewery producing fine beverages.

4/10 (6/10 if it was a real Becks)
