BEER VALLEY BLACK FLAG IMPERIAL STOUT

Beer Valley Black Flag Imperial Stout. Don't let rookies near this thing. It will mess with their heads.

It's not for the uninitiated and has been brewed with the beer rats and red wine snobs in mind because it reaches out strongly to both of them.

It has a dark pour and a disappointing lax head, but then you notice the red hints around the edges of the glass...

... And inhale. Whoa.

Lots of oddball stuff in there, like fudge, like dark chocolate and like red wine. Port, to be precise.

And it's flavour central. Lots of flavours. Big flavours. Overpowering flavours.

It feels like it's been roasted times three and it's hugely hoppy at the end, but it's hugely everything, when you think about it.

There is a lot of chocolate in it, a lot of licorice in it, a lot of coffee in it and a lot of red wine in it. And there's even some treacle in it.

Just too many flavours, even if they blend together well, to be taken seriously. It's a smart-arse brewer's beer and it's more of a show-off exercise than a legitimate piece of brewing.

Yet, it very nearly works...

6/10
