BELHAVEN SCOTTISH STOUT

Belhaven Scottish Stout. Another of Matt Walker's mixed bag of surprise beers from (very) late last year.

A clear bottles normally equals a bad beer. It's just a rule of thumb that rarely steers us wrong here at Beeriosity. The difference in Scotland is that there is rarely enough raw sunlight to drive through the glass and knock the beverage around, so it might escape the myth.

Not quite. Almost, but not quite. It looks like a stout, for sure, but then it smells like slightly diluted molasses.

I'm giving it a go in high winter here in Europe and it's only just failing to successfully walk the line between sweet and bitter.

It trips too often into the sweet and it accompanies that with bitter. It's fine while you're drinking it (though it is accentuated with added temperature) but the problem comes when you stop.

It leaves you with a very sticky mouth and you can clearly taste they've had to add something to hit the 7% figure it produces.

It's actually very close to being brilliant, but its small miss might as well be by a mile.

5/10
