BRASSERIE DUPONT SAISON DUPONT

Brasserie Dupont Saison Dupont. At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking Saison Dupont is a brand of champagne. It’s packaged in a fancy looking green champagne-style bottle with a cork. You could just imagine a posh waiter asking “is the Saison Dupont to your liking, Sir?

This is probably the most well known Saison in the world. Its rise to fame only really started in the 1980’s when it was exported to the US.

The Dupont Brewery (Brasserie Dupont) is located in Tourpes, Belgium on the site of a farm which dates back to 1759. The brewery started operations in 1844.

The first beer brewed was a “saison beer” which literally means “season beer”.  It was brewed in the autumn and winter months to provide workers with a refreshing beer to drink in the summer after a day of slogging it in the fields.

Saison Dupont or Saison Dupont Vieille Provision, as it was previously known, is described as a “classic Belgian Farmhouse Ale”. It’s brewed with Pilsner malt and Kent Goldings and Styrian Goldings hops. The Belgian Saison yeast used in the fermentation it is really what brings about its trademark characteristics. This type of yeast produces spicy and estery flavours, particularly bubblegum. It also creates a tart, dry and crisp finish.

It looks like a bright yellow wheat beer with some gritty looking sediment floating around in it. Light to medium body with relatively high carbonation. There’s a lemon-like acidity to it mixed with a bubblegum flavour. It has a crisp, dry and refreshing finish.

Saisons or Farmhouses Ales are definitely an acquired taste. Some people are not a fan of their funky flavours, acidity or dry finish. They are however, less challenging to drink than sour beers. If you’re keen to try different styles of beer have a crack at a Saison.

Saison Dupont is a classic beer and the sole reason Saisons exist today. Treat yourself to one, only after a day working in the fields of course.
