BREWCULT ACID FREAKS

Brewcult Acid Freaks. No, it’s not really acid despite the trippy label. It’s a “Balsamic Baltic Porter”. Steve Henderson (aka Hendo) is the brainchild behind Brewcult. He decided to join forces with his brother, who is a vinegar producer, to create a porter with shiraz barrel-aged balsamic vinegar. It was entered into the Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular (GABS) 2013.

Very dark brown with a sweet balsamic vinegar aroma. Low-medium body, moderate carbonation with a relatively smooth mouthfeel, probably because it’s 7.5% ABV.

It starts with a sweet almost strawberry-like flavour before leading into a chocolate malt flavour. It’s relatively sweet and has a moderately acidic and dry finish.

It’s like someone got some strawberries, marinated them in balsamic vinegar added some chocolate syrup and blended them up. It’s a little too sweet for my liking.

Definitely a dessert kind of porter.
