BRIDGE ROAD / NØGNE Ø AURORA BOREALIS I

Bridge Road / Nøgne ø Aurora Borealis I. This was created as a collaboration brew in 2012 between Bridge Roads and Norwegian brewery Nøgne ø.

The head brewer of Nøgne ø, Kjetil Jikiun, paid a visit to Bridge Road and together they brewed around 4000 litres of a Belgian Quadruple.

Kjetil then decided it could be fun to transfer the brew into local red wine barrels, throw them in a shipping container and ship them unrefrigerated all the way to Norway.

Surprisingly this actually happened and upon arriving in Norway the brew was bottled and kegged. The beer was named Aurora Australis.

So what’s in it for Bridge Road? The brewers at Nogne brewed a batch using the same recipe, transferred it into Scottish whiskey casks and shipped it unrefrigerated to Australia.

During the voyage a couple of casks exploded. Luckily most of them remained intact and Bridge Road subsequently bottled and kegged the precious cargo. Aurora Borealis was born.

I saw this on hand pump at The Royal Albert, Surry Hills, Sydney as part of a Bridge Road tap takeover. Naturally, I had to try it.

A murky light brown colour with a pale brown head with large bubbles. Strong oak and boozy aroma with a slight raisin-like aroma. Smooth, luscious, full body mouthfeel. Initial milk chocolate flavour leading into a raisin and port flavour. The aftertaste is exactly like a fine port.

If you are a fan or port and dessert beers check it out.
