BRIDGE ROAD TONY BROWN

Bridge Road Tony Brown. How do you have a dig at an anti-alcohol campaigner? Name a beer after them. That’s what Newcastle, NSW craft beer venue The Grain Store did after they teamed up with Bridge Road to brew a beer.

Tony Brown is a key architect in the so-called "Newcastle Solution" introduced in 2008 which forced clubs and pubs in the CBD to close at 3am. Not surprisingly the liquor industry and drinkers have seen him as a bit of a wowser playing the fun police.

The beer they decided to brew it’s aptly an American Brown Ale hopped with Falconers Flight, Chinook, Amarillo, Simcoe, Centennial and Zythos.

Very dark brown with a fine creamy head. Chocolate malt aroma. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

Starts with a zesty acidity leading into a chocolate malt flavour nicely balanced by a citrus and pine hop flavour. The hop flavour lingers with some resiny goodness. Then it finishes with a dry, roasted malt flavour like a robust porter.

A solid American Brown Ale with a nice mix of dark malt and American hop flavours.

8/10
