CARLSBERG CARLS SPECIAL

Carlsberg Carls Special. It always gives a bit of an insight into the soul of a major brewery, this sort of thing. This is the giant Carlsberg's attempt at a special celebration beer of its own, in an amber lager (or "Vienna") style at 4.4% ABV.

The result is the sort of thing that a limited number of people might actually like immensely, but won't float a lot of boats otherwise.

It pours so flat we had to change kegs and glasses twice (and this was poured in Carlsberg's home in Denmark, so there can be no distance or time excuses). This is the one time we managed a head and that's all the head we managed to get. And we quickly lost even that.

It initially overwhelms you with the smell of vanilla and caramel and cooked flowers. And that's not in a good way.

It's a sweet beer with a slightly cloying taste but a thin mouthfeel. There is some malt in there, but it's sweet malt, and the bitterness, when it finally comes, isn't enough to cleanse all of that stuff off the palate.

It's a bit like a big ABV beer without the big ABV.

Think I'd prefer a standard Calsberg. And that's sad.

4/10
