COLONIAL PORTER

Colonial Porter. Waiting for a table at an Indian restaurant, the unmistakable glow of an open fire could be seen at the pub across the road.

"We'll be back," I said and bolted. And what do I find but a set of taps for the very rare Colonial Brewing's offerings.

From the Margaret River area outside Perth, these beers have been making waves on the craft front, winning a lot of awards.

It was cold, rainy and the aforementioned fire was waiting so I got a half pint of the porter and settled in. I should have got a pint to save the trip back I knew I'd be making after the first sip.

Black, heavy and with a beautiful burned molasses taste on first sip, a lovely bitter after note and the faint hint of smoke (this may have been the fire).

I'm a sucker for dark beers at the best of times, but for me, this is bloody close to perfect for winter. On tap at the Half Moon in Brighton (Vic), if you're in the neighborhood, drop in.

P.S. The Indian joint across the road had an Indian beer is never heard of too, but that's another post...
