CROUCHER BREWING PATRIOT BLACK AMERICAN ALE

Croucher Brewing Company Black American Ale (BIPA). By the label you might think that this is a brew from the USA. Although it has the US version of Imperial measurement it is brewed in Rotorua, NZ with US the hops Amarillo and Simcoe and not enough malt.

It pours very dark with a great looking head and the aroma is spicy citrus and no roast malt. The label advertises this as a plus, but I’m looking for it. The flavour follows the aroma and has lovely fresh taste, but the thinness of the 5.5% ABV grows as you consume it. It is OK, but lacking in balance.

Most IPAs (Pale and Black) come in at about 7% ABV and it may that the very good ones use the extra malt to balance the high IBU.

7/10
