DOCTORS ORDERS PRESCRIPTION 12

Doctors Orders Prescription 12. I first tried this at The Wheatsheaf Hotel in Adelaide in 2012 after missing out on the first round in Sydney. I had a chance to try it again at a Doc’s Orders tap takeover at the Harts Pub as part of Sydney Craft Beer Week 2013.

Prescription 12 is the 12th official release, hence the name. The Doc describes this beer as a ‘Belgian Black IPA’. It’s basically a Black IPA with Belgian Candi Syrups thrown in and fermented with a strain of Belgian yeast. On the malt bill there is Pilsner, Wheat, Munich, and Roasted Barley. While on the hop front are Columbus, Galaxy, Target, and Sauvin. Like most of the Doc’s beers it’s strong coming in at 7.6% ABV and ~79 IBU.

Very dark brown with a red tinge when held up to light. Fine head with a chocolate malt aroma. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Starts with a chocolate malt flavour, leading into a bubblegum flavour from the yeast and finishes with a dry roasted malt finish. An interesting combo of Belgian and dark ale flavours.

8/10
