EKIM BREWING CO BERSERKER

Ekim Brewing Berserker. This beer doesn’t allude to Berserker, a suburb of Rockhampton in Queensland, Australia. Nor does it refer to an amusing scene in the 1994 cult classic film Clerks.

Check it out here for a giggle:

Being an EKIM beer this is a Nordic reference. Berserkers (or berserks) were Norse warriors renowned for fighting in battle in a trance-like fury. Some historians believe berserkers worked themselves into a form of hysteria or rage before battle. Others believe they consumed hallucinogenic mushrooms. Further theories for their temperament include mental illness such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

This isn’t a beer for the faint hearted. It is described as an Amber IPA. A big beer with roasted and toffee notes from the malt and floral and tropical fruit aromas from dry hopping with Mosaic. Not sure of the IBU level but it’s 7.2% ABV.

Dark orangey amber colour with a creamy head rich with hop oils. Smooth tropical fruit aroma. Medium body and low carbonation. Moderately sweet caramel/toffee malt followed by a strong citrus and tropical fruit flavour. There’s a sweet boozy and burnt caramel aftertaste like the top of a Crème Brûlée. It finishes with a lip smacking / plucking hop character that draws the liquid from your mouth without being overly astringent. It’s quite bittersweet so more of one or two then a session beer.

If Berserkers were around today they would froth at the mouth at the sight of this beer.
