FERAL BREWING FANTAPANTS

Feral Brewing Fantapants. Western Australia’s Feral Brewing are bringing out beers that have the whole country talking. They continue to rake in awards including the 2012 Champion Large Australian Brewery and 2012 Best International Pale Ale for their Hop Hog. The Feral Fanta Pants is as rare as hen’s teeth outside WA so when I saw it on tap I could not resist. Not surprisingly, it’s hellishly expensive at $19 a pint so I opted for the girly half pint.

This beer is a beautiful sight – deep brown / red colour with a creamy, compact and detergent-like head that exudes hop oils. It has an amazing aroma of pine needle and grapefruit. From the first sip you notice the thick, smooth mouthfeel that rolls effortlessly off the tongue. Starts with roasted malt, chocolate and a little biscuit leading into a strong pine, grapefruit and a touch of tropical fruit flavour. The show closes with a resinous, smooth, bitter finish. The hop flavours and resiny goodness lingers and has you craving more. They describe it as an Imperial Red IPA and with 7.4% ABV and 53 IBU it packs a decent punch.

The enviable question is how does it compare to the Hop Hog? Hopwise it shares the similar strong pine needle and resin character of the Hop Hog. However, the malt and hop flavours are more complex.

Not surprisingly they are pretty tight lipped on the recipe for both these beers. However, being the affable lot that they are have hinted Centennial, Citra, and Cascade are in the mix. There’s speculation there is also a little Amarillo and Galaxy.

The verdict - best ginger ever!
