FERAL HOP HOG

Feral Hop Hog. This is the beer that threw Feral Brewing into the limelight. It took out the top spot in ‘The Critics' Choice: Australia's Best Beers’ in 2011 and 2012. It was also crowned the ‘Best International Pale Ale’ at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) 2012 and Champion Ale in 2009 and 2011. Suffice to say, it’s one of the most awarded beers in Australia.

It’s honey coloured with a fine detergent-like head with a beautiful pine aroma. Medium mouthfeel and moderate carbonation.

From the very first sip, it’s a big mouth of pine needle hop flavour. It’s quite an aggressive hop flavour but there isn’t much in the way of resinous or oily hop characteristics. When I first tried this on tap I thought it was really heavy and resinous.

But in bottle form it’s more refreshing with a strong hop flavour. For a beer that is only 5.8% and 48 IBU it packs some decent flavour.

I much prefer this over the Barrel Fermented Hog version which is fermented in new French oak barriques. The result is like someone spilt their frothy eggnog into your Hop Hog. The original is still the best.

The main criticism of this beer it’s very one dimensional – pine needle flavour. Despite winning multiple awards it’s not the most amazing American style IPA. For many people it’s their first introduction to American style IPAs. As a result it’s been commercially popular. However, the Feral Fanta Pants IPA is streets ahead of this brew in terms of complexity and balance.
