FOUNDERS BREWING PORTER

Founders Brewing Porter. I like to have a crack at the local tipple wherever I travel. Sometimes it leads me to find gold, like the Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. Other times it leads me to things like this, which I'd gladly swap for a Heineken.

This is the highly rated porter from the Michigan Founders Brewing concern and I didn't like it. At all. I gave it back.

I really wanted the one with the lizard, but the keg had carked it. So I took the Founders Porter on the assurance that it was unmissable.

Now, I've had North American disasters before on "unmissable" beers but none that were as highly rated by others as this one.

It looked nice enough when it poured (I'd show you, but I liked the lizard better), but then it came over all overly bitter chocolate, all unbalanced coffee and lots of licorice. Licorice doesn't live in porters, typically, so I asked if the lines were good or the keg was bad. Assured both were fine, I'm assuming both were not fine at all.

I can only judge it on the one (or, to be more accurate, the quarter of one) that I had, but it was erratically brewed crap.

I'll happily have a crack at another one and hope to be proven wrong.
