GAGE ROADS THE CONVICT ALE

Gage Roads The Convict. I feel an affinity with this beer.

In the background is a copy of the pardon for my GGGG Grandmother Sophia Charlotte Smithers (nee East) who is not counted among my six convict ancestors.

She was born at Parramatta in 1797 and served a few months at The Female Factory for receiving stolen goods. Her convict husband Thomas was sent to Norfolk Island for the offence. Darcy Wentworth defended them and somehow managed to have Sophia pardoned quite early.

The beer; I like it. Slight hops aroma, good roast malt flavour and a bitter finish. I detected a bit of toffee sweetness from the 7.2% ABV, but this disappeared as the beer warmed.

8/10
