GRAF ARCO FESTBIER

Graf Arco Festbier. Or, to give it its full title, the Grafliche Brauerei Arco Valley Graf Arco Festbier, from Eichendorf-Adidord in Bavaria.

This is a fine little brewery that is overshadowed by some of Bavaria's more well-known operations and tries to counter with mass-production-style labels.

This is their Marzen, or festbier, which means it's a touch stronger than the standard helles variety because it has to survive longer storage, but it's only in the mid fives, alcohol-wise.

And it's good, without ever lifting to greatness. It pours nicely, has a well-balanced head and then delivers a nose that has hints of both wood and soft biscuits.

It's slightly sweet and not very bitter at all until the aftertaste, where it chimes in to add a subtle balance - so it's not one fo the IPA hopheads. This is a lager that has more of that promised biscuit flavour, combined with some honey and caramel hints.

The carbonation is medium, all the way through the glass, and the mouthfeel has a touch of oiliness, but is otherwise quite clean.

Good drinking, but there are greater Bavarians out there.

7/10
