GREAT LAKES EDMUND FITZGERALD PORTER

Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. I was lurking in a bar in Detroit and, so, a beer named after Gordon Lightfoot's most famous song seemed appropriate.

And, Gordon, I love your work and now I love this beer.

A porter is one of those styles you associate with a cold climate and, let me tell you, Michigican knows how to turn on a cold climate. Makes you wonder why more of their small brewers don't make styles like this.

Oh, wait, I know why they don't. Because no American bars seem capable of serving beer at anything over 3 degrees, so you lose all the nuance and flavour and aroma they offer. At least, they did here. So I immediately bought a second one and moved it near the fire to warm it up.

And, just like that, it went from being a dull black thing to a brilliant, shining example of porterdom.

It's deep black, with a caramel-looking head, then it wafts away with everything from chocolate to coffee to vanilla to some type of fruit. Cherries?

Its flavours are just as brilliant and they're also perfectly balanced, with some caramel and chocolate hints followed by a deep, coffee roast flavour that isn't overpoweringly bitter, with some tannin-style touches thrown in.

And, to top it all off, there's a lovely, creamy mouthfeel that walks the perfect line between being watery thin and cloyingly thick. Great stuff.

10/10
