HAWTHORN BREWING AUSTRALIAN IPA

Hawthorn Brewing Australian IPA. A new addition to the Hawthorn range is this Australian IPA released in May 2013. It’s an Aussie spin on an English pale ale but leans more towards an American IPA in flavour. Its claim to fame is that it won a Gold Medal at the International Beer Challenge 2013.

You can tell marketing people wrote the blurb on the label because it says “a copious amount of late kettle hops guarantees plenty of bitterness”. As any person with a little bit of brewing knowledge would know, late kettle hop additions add negligible bitterness. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

It’s brewed with five locally grown malts and four hop varieties grown in Tassie. The hop bill is rumoured to be Pride of Ringwood, Galaxy, Cascade and Summer (?).

Being 5.8% ABV, unfiltered and unpasteurised using all Aussie hops it appears to be a nod to Coopers Sparkling Ale.

This is a hop forward kind of IPA. Predominately passionfruit and grapefruit hop flavours, slightly bready as it is bottle conditioned with a decent level of bitterness. Definitely a fruity kind of IPA.

A nice addition to the ever increasing number of solid Aussie IPAs.
