HOLGATE BLACK FOREST SUMMER PORTER

Holgate Black Forest Summer Porter. Named in honour of the Black Forest on the way to the town of Woodend, home of the Holgate brewery. The town was literally named “wood end” because it marks the end of the Black Forest.

During the gold rush Woodend became the main thoroughfare through the Black Forest and was home to many gold-diggers (real ones, not money thieving hos). Bushrangers would often hide in the Black Forest and ambush unsuspecting gold merchants.

The name also alludes to the European chocolate and cherry cake. It’s brewed with the addition of fresh summer cherries and orange peel. It’s a limited edition brew and is 5.3% ABV.

It sure looks tasty – dark brown with a red tinge and a fine, creamy head. Chocolate malt aroma with a medium body. Milk chocolate malt flavour, smooth mouthfeel and easy drinking. I couldn’t really taste the cherries or orange peel.

More of a chocolate mousse than a black forest cake.

7/10
