HOLGATE EMPRESS IMPERIAL MOCHA PORTER

Holgate Empress Imperial Mocha Porter. They described this beer as the big sister to their Temptress chocolate porter. It’s 10% ABV, 49 IBU and has been pimped by the addition of vanilla, Dutch cocoa and locally roasted coffee beans.

Very dark brown it blocks out most of the light. Fine, light brown head.  Boozy and vegemite. Aroma.

Full bodied, luscious and smooth mouthfeel. Starts with a chocolate malt flavour, leading into a vegemite-like taste. Unfortunately, a boozy alcohol taste comes in with some astringency like a strong black coffee. It finishes with an earthy liquorice taste. Strangely it became worse as it warmed up.

Not worth the hype.

5/10
