HOLGATE HOPINATOR DOUBLE AMERICAN IPA

Holgate Hopinator Double American IPA. This sounds like the kind of beer that would put hairs on your chest. A recent tweaking of the recipe saw this beer change from 7% to 7.5% ABV and the IBU bumped from 76 to 80. Along with a new label the girly 330ml bottle has been replaced by a more manly 500ml.

On the hop bill are three American ‘C’ hops – Chinook, Centennial and Citra. To give it an Aussie spin Topaz hops have also been thrown in.

Dark honey colour with a fine head. Sweet malt aroma. Smooth mouthfeel, medium body and moderate carbonation. The first sip all hops. Then you start to taste the caramel malt with citrus and pine hop flavours coming through. It’s resinous with a bitter finish. Being a double IPA it’s quite heavy but not as cloying or sickly as others. Unfortunately as it warms up the caramel malt flavour starts to take over.

It’s good but the balance is a bit out of wack.

7/10
