ILLAWARRA BREWING FRENCH KISS

Illawarra Brewing French Kiss. This is Illawarra Brewing’s entry into the Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular (GABS) 2013, a Shiraz-barrel aged farmhouse ale.

A mixture of styles incorporating a malt bill similar to a dark Trappist ale and fermented with French Saison yeast. Barrel aged in French oak Shiraz barrels to add a layer of complexity.

I was surprised how this dark this is. You can smell the barrel conditioning – has a sweet port-like aroma.

Fruit cake flavours, spice, bubblegum and a little oak. Moderate carbonation with a relatively light body.

The Saison yeast brings about spicy and sweet flavours which when matched with a solid malt bill and barrel conditioning creates an interesting beer.

8/10
