ILLAWARRA BREWING WILKINSON’S CURSE PILSNER

Illawarra Brewing Wilkinson's Curse Pilsner. It sounds like a beer about a pirate’s ghost but it actually alludes to rugby union player Jonny Wilkinson.

Regardless of whether you follow union, we all remember that drop goal. The 2003 Rugby World Cup Final match between Australia and England. The scores were level at 17-17, with just 26 seconds remaining Wilkinson received a pass and kicked a drop goal. England subsequently won 20-17. We were robbed, they cried. I just thought he was still a wanker.

A few weeks later he sustained a painful injury. In the years that followed, he was plagued by a string of injuries and he was never the same player again. This beer celebrates his misery.

The name suggests a big, strong beer but instead it’s a lighter style pilsner brewed with Australian hop varieties Sylva and Helga.

It has a light to medium body and is quite soft and rounded. There’s a decent whack of earthy hop flavour with a nice bitter finish.

7/10
