JAMES SQUIRE HOP THIEF V

James Squire Hop Thief V. Over the last few years James Squire have been chucking a bunch of hops into a brew and releasing a limited edition beer called Hop Thief.

Each time they use different hops and the result is a something more hoppy then their other beers. Hop Thief V marks the first of the series to be added as a permanent release and will be available all year round with seasonal changes to the hop bill. This time around Citra and Centennial take to the stage.

It seems highly carbonated with a reddy orange colour and frothy head. Sweet malt and citrus aroma. Medium body with a crisp refreshing body. Mild caramel malt flavour with a predominantly citrus flavour with some underlying tropical flavours.

I quite enjoyed the first sip, strangely, though, as I drank more I liked it less. It started to taste like those faux craft beers like Sail and Anchor’s Monkey Fist. As it warmed up the hop flavours became less evident. I could mostly taste malt extract with a slight hop flavour.

Have they commercialised the Hop Thief to appeal to the masses?  The worst release of the series.

5/10
