KARL STRAUSS TOWER 10 IPA

Karl Strauss Tower 10 IPA. The beer name and image on the label conjures up an image of a military watch tower at a POW camp, but it actually alludes to the lifeguard towers along Mission Beach, San Diego, USA.

One day back in the late 1980s, two keen homebrewers met a 75 year-old master brewer, near the number 10 tower on Mission Beach.  They drew up plans to build the first local craft brewery in San Diego since the end of Prohibition (1933).

This is a classic West Coast IPA. Chinook hops are used in the boil to deliver grapefruit and pine flavours. Then it’s dry hopped with Cascade and Centennial to add some floral citrus goodness.

Opaque honey colour, fine head with a beautiful pine aroma. As your pour it from the bottle you can smell the hops. From the very first sip there’s a wave of hoppy goodness. Strong pine and citrus flavours balanced by a sweet caramel malt flavour.

It has a resinous mouthfeel with a long lasting hop bitterness. Although it’s described as an IPA at 7% ABV, and with such a big hop flavour, it’s bordering on being an Imperial IPA.

It’s one of those beers that tastes better as it warms up. Straight out of the fridge the hop bitterness can be intense. As it warms up it becomes more balanced. The malt and hop flavours develop and the mouthfeel becomes more resinous.

It’s a little bittersweet with some cloying characteristics but not overly so. This is a beer for people like love hoppy beers.
