MARSTON'S OLD EMPIRE IPA

Marston's Old Empire IPA, with new Beeriosity member George performing the modelling duties.

At the end of a stinking hot day, an IPA should be just the go. It's what they were originally designed for, after all.

This one isn't. This follows Beeriosity's rules of clear beer bottles by delivering a flavour palate that's not overly hoppy, not full flavoured and not in any way balanced.

I was disappointed in this. I really expected more. Instead, what i got was an instant hit of hop bitterness that seemed to disappear completely by the time the meniscus sank below the neck (I didn't bother pouring it - I had an isolated logistics issue).

Then there was a wave of maltiness that smacked of a north German lager, even while it was pumping out its citrus aroma.

It got better as it got warmer, but a warm beer isn't what I'm looking for on a hot day (even though it's an English beer). Not my go. Not one for the IPA hopheads, not one for the lager bods, not one for pale ale fans. I can't work out who this is for, what weather it's for or what food to eat with it.
