MCLAREN VALE BEER COMPANY VALE /ALE

McLaren Vale Beer Company Vale Ale. Pours a little hazy with a soft, creamy head and has a bit of a floral / perfume aroma. This is a fruity kind of pale ale. It has a decent citrus hop flavour with refreshing, crisp finish. The mouthfeel and residual yeast flavour reminds me of Coopers Pale Ale.

Interesting, the label describes this beer as an Australian Pale Ale.  Whilst this beer style isn’t formally defined, Coopers practically coined the term to describe their pale ale. Perhaps McLaren Vale have used White Lab’s WLP009 yeast strain AKA ‘Australian Ale Yeast’, a strain rumoured to be very similar in character to Cooper’s yeast.

What I have noticed with this beer is the flavour can vary a lot. A couple of times I’ve had bottles that were completely lacking in flavour. Like other hoppy pale ales it doesn’t seem to travel / store well. Possibly as a result of karma for being sold in wanky four packs.

Having said that on tap I’ve never been disappointed. If you see it on tap give it go!
