MURRAYS AULD BULGIN’ BOYSTEROUS BICEP

Murray's Auld Bulgin' Boysterous Bicep. There has been a lot of hype about this beer. It's a collaboration between Murray's and the Crafty Pint beer blog.

It was designed to be entered into the New Zealand 'Beervana' festival Media-brew beer challenge. It uses 200 Port Stephens Oysters, 200 blue lipped mussels from Victoria and 200 green-lipped mussels from New Zealand. Then to make it even more bizarre they added peated distilling malt to add a smokey flavour and a Belgian yeast sourced from a Trappist monastery. The result is Australia’s first Smoked Belgio Imperial Mussel and Oyster Stout. At 10% ABV, it’s a pretty strong one.

It looks like a normal stout – jet black with a coffee coloured head. Strong smokey malt aroma. Smooth, luscious mouthfeel with low carbonation.

Strong smokey flavour followed by a dark chocolate taste with a slightly salty and boozy aftertaste. It’s really smokey which I’m not a fan on. It’s what I call the Bandaid taste. It’s a combination of flavours that doesn’t appeal to me.

Hat’s off for creativity but take away the novelty factor and it’s not something I would drink again.
