NORTH COAST BREWING SCRIMSHAW PILSNER

North Coast Brewing Scrimshaw Pilsner. American craft brewers might have latched on to the IPA as their flagship species, but they haven't all abandoned bottom fermentation.

This is the Scrimshaw Pilsner from up near San Francisco and it's surprisingly good. Not northern Germany good, but good.

It pours beautifully, with a colour that's a little richer than the best pilsners and a strong, clean head that remains all the way to the bottom.

It smells a little sweet, too, with hints of lemon and vanilla.

You can pick up the malt very quickly in this beer and then there's a wave of bitterness before that tapers off for a malty aftertaste.

The best Germans deliver those things the other way around, with the crispness of the bitter finish acting like a palate cleanser for your next mouthful of beer or food.

So this is good, without being great, and an easy session beer at 4.4%.

 6/10
