RIDLEY'S OLD BOB STRONG PREMIUM ALE

Ridley's Old Bob Strong Premium Ale. So this didn't start well.

It says "Premium" on the label AND it's in a clear glass bottle. The odds were stacked against it before I'd even opened the thing (see why here).

And the first mouthfuls weren't promising, either, even with its Look At Me red colour. The bottle promises spicy citrus fruit flavours with a dried fruit/biscuit malt finish. I wasn't getting any of that. I was getting a medium hit of bitterness and bugger all else from its 5.1 percent rating and 500ml bottle.

And then I left it alone for 10 minutes while I had dinner. And by the time I'd returned to it, the Old Bob had found another gear. Hell, it found another entire gearbox.

I still don't know about spicy citrus, but there's definitely a dried fruit thing going on when it gets warmer. And then the bitterness becomes a finish, rather than the sole notable feature.

It's a very, very nice drop, from the same people who delivered the Ruddles County Ale a couple of days ago. Just don't bring it out at five degrees. There won't be any point.

7/10
