SAIL & ANCHOR JACK TAR IMPERIAL STOUT

Sail & Anchor Jack Tar Imperial Stout. This stout is brewed for the large supermarket chain Woolworths under the alleged craft beer name of Sail & Anchor.

In 2010 Woolworths dismantled the brewery at the Sail & Anchor Hotel in Fremantle, Western Australia, but decided to revive the name in 2012 to cash in on the growing craft beer market. The Monkey’s Fist Pale Ale and Boa’s Bind Amber Ale were unimpressive.

My expectations are not high as I pour, but if first impressions count this will be fine. It does look good and the roast chocolate malt aroma is very inviting on this cold night. The flavour does not disappoint. Roast chocolate and coffee with a faint hint of sweet toffee from the 9.5% ABV that well balanced by the 60 IBU. It a has smooth mouthfeel and a slightly dry finish.

I am pleasantly surprised to report that this is a basic lovely stout. Now if they could fix up their other beers.

7/10
