SAIL & ANCHOR / KARL STRAUSS THE BLOKE RED ALE

Sail & Anchor/Karl Strauss The Bloke Red Ale. I stumbled across this at Dan Murphy’s and decided to check out the label. Sail and Anchor are sporadically releasing limited edition brews so I was interested to see what it was.

I saw it was a red ale, probably one of my least favourite styles, and was about to put it back until I saw it was a collaboration with one of my favourite breweries, Karl Strauss. Could Karl Strauss lend their magic allowing Sail and Anchor to release a cracking brew?

Apparently there is a historical connection between Karl Strauss and Sail and Anchor. Back in the mid-1980’s Karl Strauss Cofounder, Chris Cramer, was enjoying a pint at the Sail & Anchor Pub in Freemantle, Western Australia. He was enjoying his beer and soon learnt it was brewed onsite. He had a light bulb moment - to setup his own microbrewery in San Diego. The rest is history.

To celebrate their 25th Anniversary Karl Strauss Brewmaster, Paul Segura, flew to Fremantle to collaborate with the Australian brewery which inspired their conception. They decided to brew a red ale with a stack of hops. Cascade and Chinook hops from the US and Australian-grown Ella and Galaxy hops. The resulting beer is 6% ABV and 60 IBU. This is a limited edition brew with only 2700 cases available Australia wide.

Red amber colour with a head that dissipates quickly. Grainy malt aroma. Medium body and carbonation. Mouthfeel better than expected, smooth and slightly resinous. Moderately sweet, grainy malt flavour with a bit of roasted malt and toasty flavours. There’s a gentle underlying grapefruit and citrus hop flavour. It has a clean and moderately bitter finish.

Above average but not in the same ball park as a Karl Strauss brew.
