SAIL AND ANCHOR DEVIL DODGER IPA

Sail and Anchor Devil Dodger IPA. Another limited release from Sail and Anchor. This time around it’s an American-style IPA. They release a few each year in an attempt to present themselves as a craft brewery when, in reality, they are a large scale commercial brewery producing beer for Woolworths.

“Devil Dodger” was a name given to a priest who, through prayer, would protect a ship’s crew from danger on the high seas. I’d rather consult the Devil than a priest regarding an IPA.

The label describes it as having “the bold aromatics of citrus, grapefruit, ripe mango and pine, hallmarks of the IPA style. Speciality malt sweetness and syrupy, piney hop notes balance to create a smooth, satisfying brew.” It comes in at 5.9% ABV and IBU 59.

A respectable looking IPA - golden colour, slight opaque with moderate carbonation and a fine head. Citrus, pine and tropical aroma with a medium to light body.

The first thing you notice is the mouthfeel is a bit thin and dry. There’s some sweet malt to start leading into citrus, little bit of pine and grapefruit hop flavours. It finishes with a crisp, dry finish with moderate bitterness. In my opinion it’s quite lacking on all fronts – malt flavour, hop flavour and bitterness. As it warms up the hop flavours diminish and it starts to get that faux craft beer malt extract flavour.

Overall, it’s above your average commercial beer but falls well short of a solid American IPA.
