SAN PAOLO JATOBA ALE

San Paolo Jatoba Ale. I've had this in the fridge, with some trepidation, for a few weeks now, because my experience of Italian craft brewers has been less than stellar (and I had a few Hofbrau Dunkels to get through first...)

I'm sorry I waited. This initially didn't promise much, brewed as it is in a style that has almost passed from modern consciousness: the Dusseldorf Ale.

It's not quite as dark as this pic indicates, but has a very deep coppery colour and it's quite cloudy because it's unfiltered and unpasteurised. 

I was initially disappointed by an aroma that smelled a bit like barbecue sauce mixed with apples, but that changed and matured as the 750ml pour warmed a bit.

The mouthfell is initially watery, with little head and very low carbonation all the way down the glass.

There's a quite sweet initial taste (those apples again, plus a bit of pear) that lessens with added temperature - about 9 degrees seems to be its go.

It follows that up with a short, sharp hit of bitterness and a soft, lingering peppery spice.

It's a very complex beer and it has been done well by the chaps at San Paolo, near Biella in Italy's north. I started by not liking it at all when it was at around 5 degrees and ended up thinking it was pretty darn good at 8-9.

One of the best I've had from Italy.
