ST GEORGEN BUTTENHEIM PILSNER

St Georgen Buttenheim Pilsner. The patron saint of England and Bulgaria, Georgia (d'uh), Malta, Montenegro and Beirut, it seems obvious then that his brewery should be based around an hour north of Nuremburg, Germany.

Yes, the old Saint George (whose rugby league team, incidentally, still holds the record in Australia for 11 straight grand final wins) is plenty revered in Germany, too. Not least because he brews a fine pilsner.

The biggest failing is its very watery mouthfeel (understandable if you are a saint who grew up in old-school Palestine), but the rest of it clicks into place with flavours from malt to grass to hay.

You could sit tippling this all day and not get bored with it, because there are a few nuances tucked away there, but it's not going to jump out and grab you compared to some of the more buttery southern Bavarians.
