STONE AND WOOD STONE BEER 2013

Stone and Wood Stone Beer 2013. The fifth incarnation of Stone Beer, Stone and Wood’s annual winter seasonal brew, it is a beer with a nod to medieval brewing.

Back in the Dark Ages brewers would use fire to heat large stones then chuck them in a wooden vat to boil the wort. In addition to heating the wort, the stones would also caramelise it creating toffee-like flavours.

The brewers from Stone and Wood used stones from Fiji.  The same stones Fijians use in their ‘lovo’ or cooking pits. To create further complexity once the stones were cooled they were thrown into the fermenter to allow the yeast to feast on the remaining crystallised “wort candy”.

This year there were a few tweaks to the recipe by the addition of chocolate wheat and a relatively new hop called Enigma. Stylistically the brewers describe it as fitting the “big, dark Germanic ale mould”. Something like a cross between and Bock and a Porter.

So is this creative genius or marketing hype?

It looks and tastes like Tooheys Old. The difference is Tooheys Old is a no nonsense beer that costs half the price of this one. It doesn’t need some hot rocks thrown in it or an elaborate story.

What an overrated beer. At $10 a schooner it loses points for being pretentious.

I am not sure what you were drinking Martin but the bottled version I had was nothing like Toohey's Old in mouthfeel or taste. Since when did Old have a rich chocolate taste?
