CAVALIER BREWING & CATFISH TAVERN DOUBLE LIFE IIPA

In somewhat of a tradition Melbourne brewery Cavalier have teamed up again with Fitzroy venue The Catfish to brew a beer. For The Catfish's third birthday Cavalier decided to release a double IPA as part of their Limited Release Series.

It’s hopped with Mosaic, Chinook, Ella and Amarillo and is 8% ABV.

Light amber colour, thin off-white head with a medium body and moderate to low carbonation. Toffee malt, sweet booze, moderately dank and tropical fruit aroma. Starts with a chewy toffee and bready malt.  A citrus and stonefruit cuts through the malt with a mild tropical fruit flavour, finishes with a sweet booze and astringent finish like a Cab Sav.

I find the malt and booze smother the hop flavours too much and it could do with a few more IBU’s to balance the booze sweetness.

Probably still prefer to drink this than eat a Catfish.

CAVALIER BREWING IPA

Cavalier IPA. I saw this on tap and had to try it as IPAs are one of my favourite styles of beer. It’s a one off, limited release American style IPA hopped with Amarillo, Simcoe, Mosaic, Centennial. It’s 6.5% ABV which is slightly under the usual 7% ABV for the style.

This is a beer that is big on flavour and aroma. Strong pine, citrus, grapefruit and stonefruit hop flavours with a solid caramel malt backbone. The mouthfeel is smooth and resinous. Big bold flavours with a kick but not has heavy or boozy as an imperial IPA.

I wish this was a main-stayer.

CAVALIER BREWING BROWN ALE

Cavalier brewing Brown Ale. A brown ale brewed with chocolate and crystal malts and “classic American hops”.

It has a sweet malt aroma, relatively thin and highly carbonated for the style. Milk chocolate flavour, malt driven with low hop bitterness.

Overall not bad, but nothing special.
