THURN UND TAXIS ZWICKL

Thurn und Taxis Zwickl. I love a good Zwickl. In fact, my beer of the year last year was Maxlrain's Zwickl Max and if you find a better unfiltered, bottle-conditioned ale than that one, I'd love a crack at it.

This one is also Bavarian, though you can't buy it in bottles, only on tap. Fortunately, a restaurant in our home town just got it on tap, so problem solved.

Unfortunately, said restaurant served it a bit cold, so it took a little while to fire up with its full array of aromas and flavours. But, oh boy, when it did...

There's a slightly sour smell to this one that's common to most good zwickls but it doesn't have the dazzling array of other tastes the Maxlrain gives you. (Unfortunately for this, that's the beer it's measured against.)

But the taste is wonderfully light with strong flavours that build across the tongue only to leave you gently in the aftertaste to deliver something like a neat bell curve of tasting. The malt is there, but not overpowering, and neither is the hops. Instead, it has beautifully balanced wide appeal, all finished off with an aftertaste that just leaves you wanting more.

Against a very high benchmark, this is a good beer.

7/10
