WYCHWOOD HOBGOBLIN RUBY BEER

Wychwood Hobgoblin Ruby Beer. Well, i'd been looking forward to this one for a while, but i'm conflicted.

It's supposedly the delivery system for chocolate caramel malts, moderate bitterness and balanced flavours, but I'm not quite getting that.

Instead, I'm feeling a delivery system for bags of flavours that don't quite work seamlessly together and seem like they're in a fight for taste supremacy that rages all the way along your tongue and finds a way to continue on in the aftertaste.

It's not poor by any means, just not as coherent as I'd hoped, given this beer's big reputation in England. It's not that I'm afraid to taste something (to misuse their slogan), but that I want to taste something I'll remember for the right reasons.

Yes, I can detect caramel. And Malt. And toast. And even a slight coffee hint. And a bit of a marmalade thing. But it's like they're not in the right proportions and the mix comes out with a slight aftertaste of cardboard packaging glue.

I would have another one, were such a thing to exist in my house, so it's not awful. And it's at its best above 10 degrees. It has a lovely mouthfeel, the smell is intoxicating and it has bags of character.

It's just disappointingly short of what it might have been.

5/10
