YOUNG DOCTOR HENRYS WHITE NURSE

Young Doctor Henrys White Nurse Stout White Stout. It’s not a typo, you read correctly “Stout White Stout”. Apparently “stout” is a term which in the past was used interchangeably to mean “strong”. Evidence of this dates back to the 14th century when “Stout Pale Ale” was common. So stylistically this beer has nothing in common with the black, bitter, dark malt driven stouts we are familiar with other than being strong.

This beer was released under the name ‘Young Doctor Henrys’ as it was a collaboration between Young Henrys and Doctors Orders Brewing. It was originally brewed as a mid-spring seasonal for Sydney Craft Beer Week 2012.

The malt bill included Marris Otter and a stack of cereal adjuncts such as wheat, oats and barley. It was hopped with new world English hops as will as a mysterious hop combo dreamt up by the Doc. It comes in at 7.5% ABV, ~69 IBU and was barrel aged to add some further complexity.

I tried the hand pumped version at a Doc’s Orders tap takeover at the Harts Pub as part of Sydney Craft Beer Week 2013.

Opaque, honey colour. Fine head with a sweet booze aroma. Smooth, luscious mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Sweet malt flavour leading into a boozy taste with a salty and bitter aftertaste that lingers.

It gets points for mouthfeel and creativity. However, I’m not really a fan of the boozy, bittersweet and sharp salty aftertaste.
